Get the most out of your electric bike battery

Biltema uses Lithium batteries with cells from known brands such as LG, Samsung and Panasonic. An electric bicycle battery is a consumable product and has an expected lifespan of 3-5 years if properly maintained.

When Biltema purchases batteries for our electric bicycles, it is extremely important for us and that the supplier we work with complies with the laws and regulations that exist. To achieve this, Biltema always works according to a Code of Conduct (COC) together with our trade agreements. We also have a central department that constantly works with these issues and makes frequent check-ups and factory visits.

General

  • Read the content of the manual carefully to find out what applies to your particular battery. There can be some differences between the different models. If you have any questions, please contact your nearest store.

  • The range is estimated and based on optimal conditions. Wind, temperature, load, speed, the amount of motor assistance utilised, road conditions and air pressure in the tyres of course have an influence. There is no standardised method of measurement so it is extremely difficult to compare different bikes against each other.

  • The battery should always be charged and stored indoors at normal room temperature.

  • The battery should always be charged for a longer time the first time (usually 12-14 hours), check the manual for what applies to your particular battery.

  • Never use an uncharged battery.

  • If you have problems with your electric bike or your battery during the warranty period or the three-year complaint period, contact a Biltema store as soon as possible. This is so that Biltema can best help you find out what the actual fault is. Never open the battery, and never allow a third-party workshop to repair or modify your battery as this may present a danger to you. The warranty for an electric bike and battery will become void if the battery is opened.

  • Never open a lithium battery, this can lead to a danger of death.

Prolong the lifespand

  • Always use the original charger. Chargers are available as a spare part in a Biltema store.

  • The battery does not have full capacity until after up to 20 charging cycles (this may vary between the different models).

  • As far as possible, try to keep the battery capacity between 20-80%. I.e. never discharge the battery completely, and never charge the battery fully. This increases the life of the battery.

  • It is better to charge the battery, for example, every two days for an hour, than to charge it fully once a week.

  • Never charge a hot battery, i.e. if you have just used the bike, the battery is hot and you should wait about 30 minutes until it has cooled completely.

  • Do not use the battery immediately after charging, wait about 30 minutes for the battery to cool down.

  • In the event of long-term storage, e.g. during winter (if the bike is not used), the battery should have a charge of between 30 and 60%, you should never store a fully charged or discharged battery for an extended period of time, and you should never leave your battery on constant charge during long-term storage. However, you should give your battery a maintenance charge at regular intervals, but only for a short period of around an hour. Some batteries can be manually put into sleep mode for long term storage, but still check the battery capacity at regular intervals to ensure it is not fully discharged and charge it for a short period until it reaches between 30% and 60% capacity. If you have a battery with sleep mode, this can be activated manually. The battery is never damaged by the sleep mode, rather it does it good, so use it.

  • Always connect the charger to the battery first and then to the wall socket.

  • Never charge a damp or wet battery, wait until it has fully dried at room temperature.

Built-in intelligence

A battery for an electric bike is not just a battery, in the battery box there is a protective circuit that continuously monitors the battery cells. This monitoring means, among other things, that if a fault is detected on a single cell, this protective circuit will shut down the battery so that it is no longer possible to use or charge it. There are also other measurements made by the protective circuit, all of which are for your safety.
