- Place the starter on a heat-resistant substrate, e.g. the barbecue's charcoal grating.
- Pour the charcoal/briquettes on top of the starter.
- Crumple up some newspaper pages and place then under the starter.
- Set fire to the paper – no accelerant required.
- After 15–20 minutes the charcoal will be glowing and can then be poured into the barbecue.
